MIPAS measures heavy ozone in the stratosphere
The left panel shows the enrichment of 50O3 as a function of latitude and altitude, while in the right panel the respective standard deviations are shown. In contrast to mass spectroscopic measurements MIPAS can distinguish between the symmetric (16O 18O 16O) and the asymmetric (18O 16O 16O) heavy ozone.
Less enrichment is found for the symmetric isotopomer. Measurement noise is the largest known source of error. The total estimated retrieval error amounts are about 4% but this value does not include spectroscopic data uncertainties because no uncertainty estimates on the key spectroscopic parameters was available. The altitude resolution is around 6 km.
