In the course of a festive event in Frankfurt on 21 September 2023, Dr. Eva Pauli received the 2023 award of the Wilhelm-Lauer-Foundation. This prize is awarded every two years for an outstanding work on a geoecologically relevant topic. Dr. Pauli receives the prize for her PhD thesis, which she successfully defended in December 2022. In this work, she addressed how the occurrence of fog is influenced by land cover. To this end, she has used satellite observations and quantified which factors favour the occurrence of fog, what fog formation and dissipation times depend on, and which spatial clusters of fog development exist in Europe. Approaches from the field of explainable machine learning were central to this work.
Dr. Pauli provides an insight into her work in her podcast episode in the series "Karlsruhe Contributions to Climate Research" (https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kit-klima-umwelt/episodes/Nebel-ber-Europa--wichtig-fr-kosysteme--schlecht-fr-den-Verkehr-e1hphl0).
On July 7 already, Ms. Pauli was awarded the ARCADIS prize for geoscientific and environmental research for her thesis.
