Middle atmospheric circulation in unprecedented detail

The figure shows effective circulation vectors as a function of altitude and latitude as derived from MIPAS measurements of long-lived tracers recorded in the months April and May, averaged over the years 2002-2012. Recently the full annual cycle of middle atmospheric circulation has been published (von Clarmann et al., 2021).

The circulation vectors were inferred by the direct inversion of the two-dimensional continuity equation (von Clarmann and Grabowski, 2016).  A validation of this novel method is found in von Clarmann and Grabowski, 2021.
